Living in Maharees, we are very aware of the effects of climate change and how vulnerable we are to the threat of rising sea levels and more frequent storms.
We want Spillane’s to survive for future generations and to that end we strive to reduce our waste and energy consumption to limit our effect on the environment and protect this beautiful place we live in.
We were thrilled to be chosen as ambassadors for ESB Dingle Energy Project in 2019. As part of the project, our entire building underwent a deep retrofit. It is fully insulated, with energy-efficient doors and windows throughout. All of our heating and hot water is now produced with Air Source Heat Pumps reducing our carbon footprint immensely. All of our lighting is LED. We have solar panels producing electricity from the lovely Maharees sunshine.
We are excited about our latest project for 2024. We’ve purchased a bio-digester with grant aid from BIM. This was part of the Brexit Blue Economy Enterprise and Development Scheme. We hope to be able to compost all of our food waste and also the takeaway packaging for Boo’s food truck. The end product is a nutrient rich soil which we hope the local farmers will use on the fields for vegetable growing.
We use local produce where possible in our dishes and encourage our staff and customers to play their part.
Our takeaway containers are either fully compostable or recyclable.
We use compostable straws.
We regularly take part in beach cleans and street cleans and are members of Maharees Conservation Association.
